Berggasthaus Alter Säntis

Berggasthaus Alter Säntis sits at 2502m on the Säntis massif in northeastern Switzerland. Reach it from Appenzell via the Säntis cable car (15 minutes), then walk northeast for 1.5 hours across high moorland. Most hikers approach on foot from Schwägalp, a 2-hour ascent, or descend from the summit of Säntis (2502m, 30 minutes) across the ridge. The hut anchors the eastern ridgeline, making it the logical stop between longer traverses connecting the Appenzell Alps.
The hut holds 50 beds in mixed and private rooms. Meals are substantial—expect meat-heavy lunch plates and four-course dinners that cater to hungry hikers. Breakfast and packed lunches available. The building is simple but functional: small bar, large dining room, basic toilets. Water comes from collected snowmelt. The hut operates year-round, though winter visits require checking snow conditions and reduced staffing in advance.
Book by email or phone at least 4 weeks ahead for weekends June through September. July and August fill quickly; aim for 8 weeks in these months. Weekend capacity tightens even in shoulder seasons. Single overnight stays are common, though many hikers build multi-day ridge traverses around a stay here. The hut welcomes SAC members with reciprocal rates.
