Berggasthaus Rotsteinpass

Berggasthaus Rotsteinpass sits at 2,120m on the Rotsteinpass, a major hiking crossing between the Säntis massif and the Appenzell Alps. The hut is 4 hours on foot from Säntis (2,502m) heading southeast, or 3.5 hours from Schäfler via the Schäflerpass. Most parties approach from the north via Appenzell. The pass itself is straightforward alpine terrain with good paths year-round. The hut commands views across eastern Switzerland into Liechtenstein and southern Germany. The location makes it an excellent base for high traverse routes across the Säntis region.
The hut holds 80 beds across mixed dormitories. Meals are provided at set mealtimes; the kitchen caters to standard alpine fare with options for vegetarians. Drinking water is available. The hut operates year-round, though staffing may be reduced outside peak summer months. Winter access requires mountain skills and avalanche awareness—contact the hut before planning winter visits. The building is relatively modern and well-maintained by its operators.
