The hut is accessible year-round on foot from the village of Ebnat-Kappel (about 1.5 hours' hiking). You can also approach via the Säntis region on longer day hikes or as part of multi-day routes through the Appenzell Alps. The location makes it an ideal base for exploring rolling forested terrain and views toward the Säntis and northeastern peaks.
The hut offers 15 beds across simple shared dorms. Meals are available—typically hearty regional food—and you can order in advance or eat what's on the day's menu. There's a basic kitchen for guest use, and water comes from the hut's own source. The building is run by volunteers and operates year-round, though opening hours vary seasonally, so check ahead before arriving in winter months. Expect basic mountain hut standards: no showers, composting toilets, and heating from wood stoves.
