Grüntenhaus

Grüntenhaus sits at 1535m on the Säntis massif in the Appenzell Alps. Reach it from Säntis village via the Schäfer Alp trail in 2 hours, or from the Säntis cable car station in 1.5 hours. The hut works as a base for walks across the northern limestone ridges and down to the Appenzell countryside. Most hikers use it as a waypoint on longer treks rather than as a destination hut.
The hut has 44 beds split across several rooms. It serves meals and drinks during operating hours. The building is basic but functional, offering what you need after a day of ridge walking. SAC members get discounts on beds. The hut is typically open May through October.
Book directly with the hut by phone or email. July and August fill weekends fast, but you can usually find space on weekdays. Winter closures are firm—confirm opening dates before heading up in April or May. The surrounding trails are less crowded than the Säntis summit itself, making this a good choice if you want to avoid the cable car crowds while still accessing the ridge system.
