Furgglenalp

Furgglenalp sits at 1500m in the Säntis massif region of northeastern Switzerland, accessible from multiple valleys in both Appenzell and St. Gallen cantons. The hut works as a base for day hikes across rolling pre-Alpine terrain and connects to longer ridge traverses. Most hikers approach from Urnäsch or Schwägalp; allow 2–3 hours on foot depending on your start point. The landscape here is gentler than higher Alpine zones—lush meadows, mixed forest, and views across to the Appenzell Alps dominate.
The hut is simple and family-oriented, run by locals who know the area well. It offers basic bunk accommodation, a restaurant serving regional food, and facilities typical of a working Alpine dairy landscape. The season runs May through October; peak crowds arrive in July and August, particularly on weekends. Staff can advise on weather-dependent route choices and current trail conditions—useful since weather changes fast at this elevation.
Book directly by phone several weeks ahead for summer weekends. The hut is popular with families and local hiking groups, so June weekends and school holidays fill quickly. Weekday visits in September offer calmer conditions and reliable weather. Call ahead to confirm meal availability if you're arriving outside standard service hours.
