Imbergalpe

Imbergalpe sits at 1,069m in the Säntis massif, accessible from Appenzell Alps hiking routes. The hut lies on the main trail between Säntis (2,502m) and lower valley villages, making it a logical rest point rather than a destination base. Most hikers reach it in 2–3 hours from Appenzell or Wasserauen. The setting is pastoral rather than high-alpine: you're still in working mountain pasture country, surrounded by dairy farms and modest peaks.

The hut operates seasonally (typically May to October) as a simple mountain restaurant run by local keepers. It offers basic dormitory beds and hot meals—expect traditional alpine food, nothing fancy. Capacity is modest, around 30 beds. The hut has running water and pit toilets; shower facilities are basic or absent. It functions primarily as a waypoint for day-hikers and mountaineers doing multi-day traverses in the Säntis region, not as a technical mountaineering base.

Phone ahead before visiting, especially weekends. The hut doesn't require advance booking for most of the season but fills quickly on sunny Saturdays and Sundays. Payment is cash on the day. Opening dates and staffing vary year to year—check locally with the Appenzell Alps tourism office or call ahead to confirm availability before planning your trip.
