Alpe Hohenschwand

Alpe Hohenschwand sits at 961m in the Säntis region of northeastern Switzerland, within the Appenzell Alps. The hut stands on a working alpine pasture with views toward the limestone ridges of the massif. Reach it from Säntis village (30 minutes on foot) or from the cable car station at Säntis-Schwägalp by descending the pasture trails (1.5 hours). The surrounding terrain suits moderate hill walkers and climbers aiming for the Säntis summit (2,502m) or exploration of the Appenzell ridge system.
The hut is managed by DAV Sektion SSV Ulm 1846 e.V. and operates year-round as a simple mountain inn rather than a formal alpine hut. It offers bed spaces and serves hot meals and drinks. Capacity is modest—expect around 15–20 places—so this works well for smaller groups rather than commercial alpine tours. The hut is popular with regional hikers and provides a comfortable base for day trips across the pasture network.
