Mindelheimer Hut

Mindelheimer Hütte stands at 2,058m in the Appenzell Alps, in eastern Switzerland near the border with Liechtenstein. Most hikers approach from Säntis (2,502m) to the northwest—a 2.5-hour descent following the ridge south. You can also reach it in 3 hours from Schäfler (2,040m) via the Schäfler Pass route. The hut is well-positioned for day hikes across the high moorland and limestone ridges of this underrated region.
The DAV Sektion Mindelheim manages this 50-bed hut, which operates year-round though staffing is lighter in winter months. Meals focus on hearty Alpine fare; half-board and dinner-only options are available. The hut has showers—a genuine luxury at this elevation. There is no WiFi. Staff speak German and English. Activities center on hiking the surrounding ridge network, with routes ranging from easy moorland walks to more technical scrambling depending on conditions and your ability.
Book direct by phone with the hut. Summer weekends (June to September) fill quickly, so call at least 2–3 weeks ahead. Weekday visits have much better availability. Winter climbing season (December–March) attracts fewer visitors but brings more volatile weather and shorter daylight—confirm conditions before heading up. The hut is a quieter alternative to the heavily trafficked huts on Säntis itself.
