About

Waltenbergerhaus sits at 2084m in the Appenzell Alps, in eastern Switzerland near the Säntis massif. The hut is reached from the village of Wasserauen in about 4–5 hours on foot, following marked trails through alpine meadow and rocky terrain. Winter access is significantly harder and requires mountain experience. The location makes it a natural base for day walks across the Säntis range and for longer traverses through the northeastern Alps.
The hut has capacity for around 75 guests in mixed dormitory rooms. SAC members and DAV members receive reduced rates. Meals are prepared daily—bring your own food or order half-board when booking. The hut has no WiFi, so plan accordingly. Water and basic washing facilities are available. The hut typically operates from mid-May through early October, though dates shift with snow conditions. Outside these months, access is unreliable and the building is unmanned.
Book well ahead for July and August: weekend slots fill 3–4 months in advance. Contact the hut directly by phone (weekdays, early morning best) or email to check current availability and confirm your arrival time. The DAV Sektion Allgäu-Immenstadt manages bookings. Many hikers approach from Säntis (2502m) to the south or descend toward Schäfler (2539m) on multi-day routes. Arrival in daylight is essential—the final approach lacks street lighting.
