Mittelbergalpe

Mittelbergalpe sits at 1369m in the Säntis massif, accessible from multiple trailheads in eastern Switzerland. The hut works well as a base for day hikes across the limestone plateaus or as an overnight stop on longer routes through the Appenzell Alps. From Säntis itself, allow 2.5 hours descent. From the Schwägalp pass, the walk takes 1.5 hours. Winter snow and exposed terrain on some approach routes require alpine judgment.

The hut accommodates 24 guests in simple dormitory rooms. Half-board is standard—substantial dinners and breakfasts fuel mountain days. The kitchen handles vegetarian meals and can accommodate dietary restrictions with advance notice. Open year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions and avalanche stability. Basic facilities include a communal living area with wood stove, an outhouse, and water from the spring.

Book directly by phone as far ahead as possible during summer school holidays and weekends. July and August fill 4–6 weeks in advance. Winter visits are quieter but require confirmation that access is viable. The hut manager can advise on current conditions and which approach routes are safe on your intended date.
