Alpe Starkatsgund

Alpe Starkatsgund sits at 1213m in the Säntis massif, roughly between St. Gallen and Appenzell. Drive to Schwägalp car park and walk 1.5 hours northwest along the Säntiser Höhenweg to reach the hut. Most hikers approach from Säntis (2502m) to the south, dropping 1289m in 2.5–3 hours over steep pasture. The hut also works as a base for traverses across the Säntis range or as a stopping point on longer ridge walks through eastern Appenzell Alps.
Alpe Starkatsgund is a working alpine dairy farm that offers simple accommodation and meals. The hut has room for around 40 people and serves hearty Alpine food, including cheese and dairy products made on-site. Water is reliable, but showers are cold (solar-fed). The season runs June to September, though Easter weekends occasionally open earlier. Camping is not permitted on the property.

Mid-week visits in June and September offer more availability. The hut sits on private land, so respect farm operations and don't expect hotel-standard facilities. Drying space is limited in wet weather.
