Schäfler

Schäfler sits at 1,924m in the Appenzell Alps, reached from the village of Säntis in around 2 hours on foot. The hut anchors a web of mid-range hiking routes across rolling alpine meadow. Access is straightforward: take the cable car from Säntis to Säntis peak (2,502m) then descend to the hut, or approach directly from the valley on marked trails. Summer hiking dominates here—the terrain suits walkers aged 8 to 80, with routes linking to nearby huts like Schäfler's sister properties across the region.
Schäfler operates as a SAC hut with around 80 beds split across dormitories and a few private rooms. Kitchen staff serve three meals daily during season. The hut has hot showers, drying rooms for wet gear, and a small bar. Self-catering is not an option—the hut supplies all meals. Open year-round, though winter sees reduced staffing and weather often closes higher routes; confirm conditions before traveling in December through March.
