Sonnalm

Sonnalm sits at 1,800m in the Appenzell Alps of eastern Switzerland. The hut is reached via hiking trails from the villages in the Säntis region. Most approaches take 2 to 3 hours on well-marked paths. The location makes it a natural base for day walks across the rolling alpine meadows and ridge lines that characterise this quieter corner of the Swiss Alps, away from the busier central ranges.

The hut operates as a mountain restaurant and simple lodging. It has capacity for around 30 guests and serves hot meals during opening hours. Overnight accommodation is basic but functional. The hut is open year-round, though conditions in winter may limit access. Phone ahead to confirm availability and to arrange meals, particularly if you're arriving with a larger group. The kitchen can prepare packed lunches for onward hiking.

Call the hut directly to book your stay. The Appenzell Alps region sees steady foot traffic but nothing like the Bernese Oberland, so booking is often possible with shorter notice. July and August are the busiest months—aim to reserve at least a month ahead for these periods. Outside summer, book a week or two in advance.
