About

Refuge des Sommêtres sits at 1075m in the Jura Mountains near the French border, roughly 90 minutes south of Geneva. The hut is accessible year-round by car via forest road to a parking area, then a 20-minute walk. Most hikers approach it as a base for day walks through the limestone plateau and beech forests, or as an overnight stop on longer Jura traverses. The valley location means you gain height gradually here rather than in one push—useful for acclimatisation if you're heading to higher ranges afterwards.
The refuge holds around 40 people across simple dormitory rooms and a few doubles. Meals are substantial: expect hearty Jura specialities like Comté cheese, cured meats, and game in season. Showers and toilets are functional rather than luxurious. The hut operates year-round, though staffing is reduced in winter months—call ahead if you're visiting November through March. The common room has a fireplace and decent views across the plateau towards Mont-Blanc on clear days.
Book directly by phone or email at least two weeks ahead for weekends, four weeks for July and August. July and August are busy but not overwhelmingly so; September through October offers better solitude and weather. Rates are reasonable by Swiss standards. Half-board (dinner and breakfast) is standard. The hut welcomes solo hikers and small groups equally. Credit cards are accepted but cash is safer in winter.
