Glärnischhütte

Glärnischhütte sits at 1990m on the north flank of the Glärnisch massif, guarding routes into the Sernftal and across to the Säntis. The main approach runs from Elm via the Äsch valley, taking roughly 3 hours on a well-maintained path. You can also reach it from Engi in the south, a longer but scenic alternative. The hut serves as a base for ridge traverses, peak ascents, and multi-day hut-to-hut treks across eastern Switzerland.
The hut holds 90 beds split across multiple dormitories. The SAC operates it year-round, serving hearty meals from the kitchen or offering a self-catering option if you prefer to cook. Drinking water is available on-site. The location gives you access to Glärnisch (2914m) in 3–4 hours, and numerous other peaks in the Säntis-Appenzell Alps range within half a day.
Book through SAC Sektion Tödi directly by phone or email. July and August fill quickly—aim for 4–6 weeks ahead during peak season. Shoulder months (June and September) are less crowded. The hut closes sporadically in winter, so confirm current opening dates before travelling. Many visitors combine a night here with the Säntis or routes toward Appenzell, so expect company on weekends year-round.
