Ortstockhaus

Ortstockhaus sits at 1772m on the northeast side of Säntis, above the village of Engi in the Glarus Alps. The standard approach is from Engi (840m), a 3-hour hike gaining 932m through forest and alpine meadow. From the Säntis region you can also traverse south from the main summit (2502m) in about 2 hours. This location puts the hut on a key transit route between the Säntis massif and the Glarus backcountry, making it useful for multi-day traverses or as a base for exploring the northern limestone slopes.
The hut offers 27 beds in a mix of dormitory and double rooms. Meals are available in the dining room, and the kitchen supplies hot drinks and simple food. Water comes from a mountain spring. The hut has no shower but basic washing facilities are provided. Ortstockhaus operates year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions—phone ahead if visiting December to February. The SAC manages the hut and maintains it to standard Swiss alpine hut standards.
Book by phone directly with the hut. Summer weekends fill quickly from June through September, especially July and August—contact 2–3 weeks ahead for these periods. Weekday visits have better availability. The hut prefers advance notice for meal planning, particularly if you have dietary requirements. Winter bookings should confirm access conditions when you call.
