Alp Somtgant

Alp Somtgant sits at 2,119m in the Prättigau valley, a working alpine dairy farm in Graubünden's eastern foothills. Reach it from Schlappin village (1,307m) via a 2.5-hour hike on marked trails through forest and pasture. The route gains 812m steadily but without technical difficulty. Summer access is reliable from June through October. Winter visits are possible but require mountain experience and avalanche awareness.

This is a simple working alp, not a managed mountain hut. The dairy produces cheese and butter during summer months. Basic accommodation sleeps around 20 people in dormitory rooms. Meals focus on dairy products and traditional Alpine fare—expect simple, filling food rather than restaurant cooking. There's no electricity or running water in the traditional sense; the alp operates on rainwater collection and basic sanitation. A wood stove provides heating. The setting is genuinely remote by Swiss standards, with no road access and no other buildings nearby.
