Baita Armentarga

Baita Armentarga sits at 1,780m in the Dolomites near the Val di Funes. It's a working mountain pasture that doubles as a simple hut. Reach it from the village of Villnöss in about 2.5 hours on foot, following marked trails through beech forest and alpine meadow. The approach is steady but not steep. In summer you can also drive partway up the track, which cuts hiking time to 90 minutes from the upper carpark.
The hut operates as a rifugio in the traditional sense: basic but genuine. It has around 15 beds across simple rooms. The kitchen serves hearty South Tyrolean fare—excellent for refueling after days in the mountains. Meals are home-cooked from local ingredients. There's no hot shower, only cold water and a basic wash setup. Toilets are basic too. The hut runs June to September, weather dependent. This is genuine alpine hospitality, not a resort. Come here for the mountains and the food, not creature comforts.
Book directly by phone or arrive on foot—there's no booking website. The hut is family-run and prefers phone calls. It fills fast in July and August; for those months contact them by early June. Off-season visits (June and September) need prior arrangement. Phone ahead anyway to confirm opening dates, as snow and weather in the shoulder seasons can force temporary closures.
