Refuge Cabin Lago Nero

Rifugio Capanna Lago Nero sits at 1,997m in the Ticino Alps, above the village of Bosco Gurin in the Vallemaggia. Reach it from Bosco Gurin (1,504m) in 2.5 hours via a marked trail that climbs steadily through woodland and alpine meadow. The hut overlooks Lago Nero, a small glacial lake fed by meltwater from the peaks above. It's a solid base for day walks across the high plateaus and ridges of this quieter corner of the Swiss Alps, away from the crowds of the Uri and Bernese Oberland.

The refuge is a simple mountain shelter run by the Società Ticinese di Utilità Pubblica. It sleeps around 30 people in dormitory beds. Hot meals are served in the evenings; bring your own lunch or eat simple fare at the hut. Water comes from the lake. There's no electricity beyond a small solar panel. The hut is open year-round but sees limited traffic outside summer and early autumn. Snow can block access from November through April; check conditions before visiting in shoulder months.

Book directly by phone as far ahead as possible. July and August fill quickly, particularly weekends. The hut doesn't always staff the phone line, so multiple calls may be needed. Independent trekkers often find space mid-week in July or any day in June or September. Winter ascents are possible for experienced mountaineers with crampons and ice axe, but snow stability varies greatly.
