Baita del Vai

Baita del Vai sits at 1,342m in the Val Masino, a remote granite valley in Lombardy's Valchiavenna region. The approach takes 2.5 hours from Bagni di Masino trailhead, following the Val Masino path upstream through larch forest and alongside the Masino torrent. The trail is well-marked and straightforward, though exposed sections near the river require care in wet conditions. This location makes the hut an ideal base for accessing the granite towers and rock climbing routes that dominate the upper valley, particularly Cengalo and Pizzo Badile.
The hut is managed by the CAI (Italian Alpine Club) and sleeps around 30 people in shared dormitories. Meals are provided on a half-board basis, with simple mountain food and reliable water supplies. The hut operates year-round but expect limited services outside the climbing and hiking season (May to September). Winter access is possible but requires mountain experience. Facilities are basic: no shower or electricity, composting toilets, and cold water only. This is genuine mountain accommodation, not a resort.
Book directly with the hut by phone or email at least 2–3 weeks ahead, especially for weekends between June and August when climbers flock to the valley. July and August are busiest. The hut's remote location and limited capacity mean advance planning is essential.
