Baitel

Baitel hut sits at 1,918m on the Säntis massif in northeastern Switzerland, where the Appenzell Alps meet easier terrain. Reach it from Säntis station (1,682m, accessible by cable car from Schwägalp) in 45 minutes on marked paths, or hike up from Bad Appenzell (700m) in roughly 4 hours. The location gives quick access to ridge walks across the Säntis group and scrambles on neighbouring peaks. From here you can traverse to Schäfler or drop down to Appenzell valley.

Baitel operates as a staffed SAC hut managed by the Säntis section. It sleeps around 30 people in dormitory rooms. Meals are available including a basic breakfast and evening dishes cooked to order. The hut has running water and pit toilets—no showers. It opens year-round but snow and icing make access difficult December through February. Summer weekends fill quickly. The hut sits exposed to weather, so bring warm layers regardless of season.

Book directly with the hut by phone (071 365 65 65). For July and August weekends, contact them at least two weeks ahead. Outside peak season, phone 24 hours before. The hut prefers advance notice for groups over eight people. Half-board (bunk, dinner, breakfast) costs around 65-75 CHF per person. Pay cash on arrival—they do not reliably accept cards.
