Bivacco Caldarini

Bivacco Caldarini sits at 2501m in the Albula Alps of Graubünden, accessed from the Prättigau valley. The approach takes 3–4 hours from Schiers, climbing through larch forest and alpine meadows to reach the hut's remote location. This is a serious mountain approach, not a valley-to-hut stroll. The bivacco serves as a base for traverses across the Albula range and ascents of Säntis-adjacent peaks.
The hut is a small, unmanned structure managed by CAI Desio (Como section of the Italian Alpine Club). It has 9 beds arranged in shared dormitory style with basic mattresses and blankets. There is no guardian, no meals service, and no hot water. You bring your own food and stove fuel. The hut operates year-round but is most reliable in summer and early autumn when snow doesn't block the approach. Winter access is possible for experienced mountaineers with skis or snowshoes.
Book directly with CAI Desio before your visit—there is no online reservation system. Contact them at least 2 weeks ahead, especially in July and August. Bring a headtorch, warm sleeping bag, and cooking equipment. Water is available from snowmelt or streams near the hut. The location demands self-sufficiency and route-finding confidence in poor visibility.
