Refuge Viola

Refuge Viola sits at 2,314m in the Prättigau valley, in eastern Graubünden. Reach it from Schruns (Austria) via the Lünersee route in 4–5 hours, or from Rankweil via the Schafälpele in 5–6 hours. Both approaches climb steeply but consistently. The hut is well-positioned for day walks across open pastures and into the limestone peaks surrounding the Säntis massif. Winter access is unreliable; aim for June through October.

The hut offers around 80 beds in dormitory rooms and a few double rooms. Meals are reliable and generous—dinner is served from 18:30, and a proper breakfast buffet is included. The kitchen prepares packed lunches if ordered the evening before. Showers are available (small charge). Toilets are basic but clean. Mobile reception is patchy but email usually works. The hut runs from late May through mid-October, closing during heavy snow.

Book directly by email or phone at least 8 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. June and September are quieter and easier to accommodate. Arrival after 18:30 requires prior notice. The hut is family-run and prefers advance notice for large groups. Payment is cash or bank transfer only—no card facilities.
