About

Bivacco Davide Salvadori sits at 2,667m on the south side of Monte Rosa, in the uppermost reaches of the Wallis region near the Swiss-Italian border. Access is technical: from Staffel (2,262m) near Saas-Grund, most parties traverse the Hohlaub Glacier toward Breithorn, then descend southeast to the bivouac. Allow 5–6 hours from Staffel. This is not a casual day hike. Winter and early-season access requires crevasse rescue skills and crampons. In summer, rockfall hazard increases, so go early in the day.
The bivouac is a small emergency shelter with no guardian and no amenities. It sleeps 4–6 people on a basic platform. Bring your own sleeping bag, mat, food, and water. There is no heating, no cooking facilities, and no toilet beyond nature. You will be self-sufficient. The shelter offers only walls and a roof—use it as a staging point for high-altitude mountaineering objectives like Breithorn (4,164m) or deeper Monte Rosa traverses, not as a comfortable overnight base.
The bivouac is open year-round in principle, but access is practical only June to September. Check conditions with the SAC Saas-Fee section or local alpinists before planning a visit. Notify someone in the valley of your itinerary. Bring a map, compass, and GPS; the shelter is small and easily missed in poor visibility. Never assume it is available or staffed.
