Holzer-Hut

Holzer-Hütte sits at 2,262m in the Liechtenstein Alps, accessed from the Malbun valley on Liechtenstein's eastern side. The standard approach takes 2.5 to 3 hours from Malbun settlement, following marked trails through alpine pasture and sparse terrain. The hut serves as a base for ridge walks and scrambles across the Appenzell Alps, including approaches to peaks like Säntis and routes into the Appenzell and St. Gallen Alps. Snow can block access from November through May, so check conditions before attempting a winter visit.
The hut is small and simple, run by LAV (Liechtensteiner Alpenverein) volunteers. It sleeps around 20 people in dormitory beds and offers evening meals and breakfast if you book ahead. There is no running water, no shower, and no flush toilet—this is a basic mountain refuge designed for hikers who expect Alpine spareness. A caretaker is usually present during summer months (June through September), though operating dates vary year to year.
Book meals by contacting the hut directly several days in advance. High season is July and August. The hut is best suited for self-sufficient mountaineers comfortable with minimal facilities.
