Refuge Alpe Granda

Rifugio Alpe Granda sits at 1,683m in the Val Bregaglia, a valley that cuts south from Chiavenna into the Bergell Alps. The hut occupies open pastureland with views toward the Sciora peaks. Reach it from Stampa via the village of Bondo—a steady 2.5-hour walk gaining 550m on good paths through larch forest and alpine meadow. The approach is straightforward and suitable for walkers with basic fitness.
The rifugio is a working mountain farm and cheese producer. It offers 18 beds in simple, shared rooms. Meals focus on local produce and homemade cheese. The kitchen provides hot water and basic facilities. The hut operates year-round, though access in winter depends on snow conditions and requires proper kit. No electricity; lighting comes from gas lamps. The atmosphere is deliberately low-key and rustic.

Shoulder seasons (June, September) offer quieter conditions. The hut is reached by foot only; there is no road access.
