Refuge Scotti

Rifugio Scotti sits at 1,466m in the Prättigau valley, below the Säntis massif in eastern Graubünden. Reach it from Schänis via the Walensee railway line, or hike up from Walenstadt in roughly 2.5 hours. The approach follows well-marked trails through mixed forest and alpine meadow. Most parties use it as a base for day walks into the surrounding peaks rather than an overnight stop on a long traverse.

The refuge holds 15 beds across simple shared rooms. The SAC-affiliated hut serves dinner and breakfast; bring cash, as card payments are unreliable at this elevation. There is no WiFi. Water comes from a spring. The hut operates year-round but check ahead for maintenance closures—winter access depends on snow conditions and avalanche risk. Heating is adequate but not luxurious; bring a warm sleeping bag if you visit November through March.

Book directly by phone or email. Summer weekends, especially in July and August, fill weeks ahead; aim for three to four weeks' notice in high season. Midweek visits in June and September are much easier to arrange. The hut is popular with Swiss families on their home range, so expect a relaxed, local atmosphere rather than an international crowd. Confirm your arrival time when you book—the custodian sometimes leaves for resupply runs in the valley.
