Refuge Alpe Lago

Rifugio Alpe Lago sits at 1,557m in the Ticino Alps, well south of the main alpine crest where the terrain rolls into gentler, forested slopes. The hut lies on the popular hiking route between Nufenen Pass and the Val Bavona, making it a natural stop on multi-day traverses of southern Switzerland. Reach it from Praa di Fuori in roughly 2 hours on marked trails, or from Fusio in 2.5 hours via the Robiei lake circuit. The approach is straightforward—no scrambling or exposure—though the paths can be muddy in wet conditions.

The rifugio operates as a simple mountain shelter with 12 beds split across small dorms. The custodian provides basic meals, including hearty dinners and breakfasts fuelled by locally sourced ingredients when possible. Showers are available but expect cold water in shoulder months. The hut sits on the SAC network and maintains the standards you'd expect: clean, functional, no frills. It opens from late May through September, with best conditions June through October. The surrounding landscape offers straightforward day hikes to nearby peaks and lakes—good territory for acclimatisation or rest days on longer routes.

Book directly by phone well ahead for July and August. June and September are less crowded. The hut lies remote enough that walk-ups are unlikely during peak season; confirm availability before heading up. Winter access is not reliable.
