Refuge Barchi

Rifugio Barchi sits at 1,710m in the Val Bregaglia, reached via the village of Stampa in southern Graubünden. The approach takes 2 hours from Stampa through larch forest and alpine meadow. Most hikers arrive from the Bregaglia valley floor after 3–4 hours of steady climbing. The hut works as a base for scrambles toward Pizzo Badile (3,308m) and Cengalo (3,369m), or as a waypoint on longer traverses through the region.
The hut is small and simple. It sleeps around 20 people in shared dorms and provides hot meals including polenta, risotto, and local cheese. Water comes from a spring. There's no electricity, no wi-fi, and no shower. You'll wash in cold water and read by candlelight. The season runs June through September, closing in bad weather or early snow. The refuge is run by volunteers from the region.
Book by email or phone direct to the hut rather than through an intermediary. Summer weekends fill quickly—reserve at least 2–3 weeks ahead. July and August need 4–6 weeks' notice. The hut management speaks Italian and German; English is possible but not guaranteed. Arrive by mid-afternoon to secure a meal and understand tomorrow's weather. The approach requires mountain fitness but no technical climbing.
