Refuge Cesare Mitta

Rifugio Cesare Mitta sits at 2,020m in the Avers Valley, a remote corner of Graubünden accessible from the village of Juf. The hut lies on the main hiking route between Juf and Safien, making it a natural overnight stop for traversing the Appenzell Alps. Most hikers approach from Juf, a 2.5-hour walk gaining 400m. The route follows a well-marked trail through larch forests and Alpine meadow.

The rifugio is managed by SAC (Swiss Alpine Club) and offers 40 beds in shared dorms. It has a simple kitchen, running water, and an outhouse. The guardian serves evening meals and breakfast using local ingredients when available. The hut operates year-round but is quietest in winter—check conditions before visiting November through March as snow can make access tricky. Water comes from a spring near the hut; the location feels genuinely isolated without being inaccessible.

Book directly by phone well ahead for July and August weekends. The hut is popular with hikers doing the full Appenzell Alps traverse and fills quickly in summer. Winter visitors should contact the SAC Graubünden section to confirm the guardian is present. The nearest road access is via Juf, which sits at 2,262m and has basic supplies but no accommodation—plan accordingly.
