Refuge de Marie al Volano

Refuge de Marie al Volano sits at 1428m in the Val d'Aosta region of the Italian Alps, near the village of Valgrisenche. The hut is a 2.5-hour hike from the road at Valgrisenche village. Most hikers approach from the south via trail 4, which climbs steadily through larch forest and alpine meadow. In winter, the lower approach is occasionally snow-bound, so check conditions before heading out.

The refuge operates as a simple mountain shelter with around 30 beds. Meals are basic but hearty—expect typical Valle d'Aosta cooking with polenta, soups, and local cheeses. The hut has running water and basic toilets. It's staffed seasonally from June through September, with weekends only in shoulder months. There's no electricity or heating beyond a woodstove, so bring a headtorch and warm layers even in summer. The refuge is unmanned outside the season, though emergency shelter remains available.

Book directly by phone or email well ahead for July and August weekends. The hut fills quickly during peak season. Outside summer months, call ahead to confirm if anyone is present. The refuge is popular with hikers heading toward Gran Paradiso National Park or doing multi-day circuits in the Val d'Aosta. The location works well as a base for day walks in the surrounding cirques and as a staging point for longer mountain traverses.
