About

Rifugio Gheza sits at 2,087m in the Bergell Valley, on the southern slope of the Säntis massif. The hut occupies a transition zone between the Alps and Mediterranean landscapes. You reach it in 2.5 hours from Soglio (1,680m), a village accessed by bus from Chiavenna in Italy. The approach follows a well-marked trail through larch forest and open pasture. This is not a technical climb. The hut also connects to longer traverses toward the Bondasca Valley and east toward the Passo del Gallo.
Rifugio Gheza is a small SAC hut with 30 beds split across dormitory rooms. It serves hot meals at dinner and packed lunches for the next day. Water comes from a spring. Mobile phone coverage is unreliable. There is no WiFi. The hut operates year-round but is most reliably staffed June to September. Winter access requires avalanche awareness and should only be attempted by experienced winter hikers.
Book directly by email or phone at least one week ahead during July and August. The hut fills quickly on summer weekends. Contact the SAC section managing the hut or check the SAC hut database for current contact details and any seasonal closures.
