Refuge Massimo Erler

Rifugio Massimo Erler stands at 1,400m in the Prättigau valley, in the Graubünden region of eastern Switzerland. The hut is accessible by hiking from the village of Schiers, which lies on the main valley road. Allow 2.5 to 3 hours from the village to reach the hut. The approach follows well-marked trails through mixed forest and opens onto alpine meadows as you gain elevation. The location gives access to hiking routes across the Säntis massif and surrounding ridges.
The refuge operates year-round and provides 45 beds in simple dormitory rooms. The hut serves hot meals including a three-course dinner menu and a substantial breakfast. A small shop stocks basic provisions, snacks, and water bottles. The building has running water, heated rooms, and electricity. Cell phone reception is patchy. The hut is managed by the Säntis Alpine Club and maintains the standards you'd expect from a Swiss mountain refuge.
Book by email or phone at least two weeks in advance for weekend visits. July and August require booking 4 to 6 weeks ahead. The hut fills quickly during school holidays and fair-weather weekends. The location makes it a solid base for day walks and the Säntis summit (2,502m), which takes 4 to 5 hours round trip from the hut.
