Refuge Valmalza

Rifugio Valmalza sits at 1,998m in the Prättigau valley, a quieter corner of eastern Switzerland. You reach it by hiking from Schruns in Austria (2.5 hours) or from Partenen on the Swiss side (2 hours). The approach is straightforward valley walking through mixed forest, gaining around 600m elevation. This location makes it useful as a base for day hikes in the Silvrettas or as a stage on longer traverses linking Vorarlberg with Graubünden.
The rifugio is a simple, traditional mountain hut run by a local family. It sleeps around 30 people in dormitory rooms and a few private doubles. Meals are hearty and rely on local ingredients—expect substantial evening meals and a decent breakfast. The hut has running water, basic heating, and composting toilets. It stays open from June through September, depending on snow conditions. There's no electricity above 11pm, which makes sense at this elevation.
Book directly by phone or email at least 4 weeks ahead during July and August, when mountain huts across this region fill quickly. The hut is quieter in June and September, making those months easier for last-minute booking. Half-board (bed and meals) is the standard arrangement; they can usually accommodate vegetarian diets with advance notice.
