Baita Scoiattoli

Baita Scoiattoli sits at 2,395m in the Bergamo Alps, on the eastern side of the Presolana massif. Reach it from the village of Castione della Presolana in 2.5 hours on foot. The standard route follows the CAI path up steep forest terrain, emerging into open meadows before the final push to the hut. In winter and poor visibility, the trail is steep and exposed—use a guide or turn back if conditions deteriorate.

The hut sleeps 20 people in mixed dormitories. Meals are available at dinner and breakfast. The kitchen is basic but functional. Water comes from a mountain spring. Toilets are outside—expect squat toilets in winter. The hut sits on high pasture with views toward the Orobie range. This is a working base for ascents of the Presolana (2,521m) and traverses toward Pizzo Erbellina. Summer is the active season; winter access depends on snow conditions and your mountain skills.

Book directly with the hut keeper before visiting, especially in July and August when it fills with weekend hikers. The hut operates from June through September in most years, but confirm opening dates each spring. Bring cash—card payments are unreliable at this elevation. Mobile signal is poor; plan your approach and descent timing before you arrive.
