Cabin Alpe D'Alva

Capanna Alpe d'Alva sits at 1570m in the Lepontine Alps of southern Ticino, on the border between Switzerland and Italy. The hut is reached from the Val d'Alva by a steady 2–2.5 hour hike from the village of Nivo. Most hikers approach from the north via the Gotthard or San Gottardo passes. The location makes it a natural base for day walks across high pastures and scrambles to nearby peaks including Pizzo d'Alva (2508m), which is a 3-hour round trip from the hut. Winter access requires good snow experience and avalanche awareness.
The hut is run by the SAC (Swiss Alpine Club) and provides dormitory accommodation for 24 guests. The guardian serves hearty evening meals and simple breakfasts. A water source is nearby, though you should verify availability during dry periods. Facilities are basic but well-maintained: drying room, composting toilet, and no electricity except charging by donation. The hut operates from June through October. Winter stays can sometimes be arranged, but contact the guardian first. The quieter months of June and September offer the best conditions for hiking without crowds.
Book directly with the hut by phone or email at least 4 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. The access route can become unreliable after heavy rain or early snow—check local conditions before setting out. Groups larger than 8 should contact the guardian in advance.
