Cabin Alpe di Garíss

Capanna Alpe di Garíss sits at 1,422m on the Alpe di Garíss plateau in the Leventina valley, Ticino. Reach it from Rodi-Fiesso by hiking 2.5 hours northeast through mixed woodland and alpine pasture. The approach gains 600m steadily but stays manageable. In winter or wet conditions, the final section can be muddy. You can also approach from Rossura to the south, adding time but offering different scenery. The hut is accessible year-round on foot, though snow cover closes the site December through March most years.
The hut provides 20 beds across simple shared rooms. Meals are available—order dinner when you book. The kitchen serves straightforward mountain food: pasta, soups, local cheese. There's a basic bar. Showers exist but hot water isn't guaranteed. No WiFi. The atmosphere is working-hut rather than tourist-focused. It's popular with hikers tackling traverses across the Leventina and with mountaineers using it as a base for peaks in the nearby Gotthard massif, particularly Pizzo Rotondo and Pizzo Centrale.
Book direct by phone or email at least one week ahead, longer if you're going in July or August. The hut fills quickly on weekends in summer. October brings reliable weather and fewer crowds. Bring cash—card payment isn't reliable. If the hut is full, nearby Capanna Pizzo Centrale (2,000m, 3 hours further) has space more often.
