Cabin Gesero

Capanna Gesero sits at 1,765m in the Val Bavona, deep in the Ticino Alps south of the Gotthard. The hut is reached from Cavergno (860m) in the valley below—a 4-hour climb following the Bavona stream uphill through mixed forest and alpine meadow. The path is steady and well-marked, gaining 900m elevation over good terrain. Alternatively, approach from the north via Passo del Gotthard, though this requires crossing higher passes and is more committing. Most hikers make this a day-trip destination rather than an overnight stop, which means the hut works well as a base for exploring the quieter valleys of southern Switzerland.

The hut is managed by the local community and offers simple, functional accommodation for 40 people across mixed dormitory rooms. Evening meals focus on hearty mountain food—soups, polenta, risotto, local cheese. A basic breakfast is included with beds. The hut operates year-round, though snow and access conditions make winter visits unpredictable. Water comes from the stream. Solar panels provide limited electricity; expect no wifi or phone signal. Toilets are basic but functional. The hut appeals to hikers seeking solitude rather than comfort or social atmosphere.
