Refuge Cabin Falco

Rifugio Capanna Falco sits at 1,245m in the Val Bavona, Ticino. Approach from Fontana by hiking up the valley floor for 2 hours on a well-marked path. The hut serves as a base for day walks through the lower Ticino Alps and access to higher peaks via scrambling routes. Rock outcrops and larch forests surround the location, with views down-valley toward the Gotthard massif.
The rifugio offers 12 beds across simple shared dormitory rooms. The kitchen provides half-board (dinner and breakfast) or full-board arrangements. Water comes from a spring. The hut is family-run with a rustic atmosphere and no electricity or hot showers—expect basic mountain conditions. Open June to September, weather dependent. Bring a headlamp and warm layers; nights are cold at this elevation even in summer.
Contact the hut directly by phone to reserve beds. Book at least 2-3 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. The hut fills quickly during school holidays. Arrive before 6 p.m. to eat dinner the same day. No online booking system exists—phone Italian or bring a phrasebook.
