Refuge Fondomonfracchio

Rifugio Fondomonfracchio sits at 1072m in the Val Vigezzo, just inside Ticino's border with Piedmont. Reach it from Malesco in 2.5 hours on foot, or from Re in 3 hours. Both valleys have road access and public transport. The hut serves as a base for ridge walks across the Grajola group and climbs into the surrounding peaks. Shorter day walks radiate in all directions through mixed forest and alpine meadows.
The refuge is managed by CAI Vigezzo. It has 40 beds split across shared rooms. Kitchen facilities and a small restaurant serve hikers. Opening dates vary by season—contact ahead before visiting in winter or shoulder months. Water comes from a spring; toilets are basic but functional. The hut has no electricity or heating except for the kitchen.
Book direct by phone or email with the CAI Vigezzo section. The refuge fills during summer weekends and in August. Phone ahead even for mid-week visits in July and August. The Val Vigezzo sees fewer international trekkers than classic Swiss valleys, so advance booking is less critical than in Valais or Uri, but Friday and Saturday spots go quickly in high season. Access by public bus and road proximity means it works well for a single night as a waypoint on longer valley traverses.
