Refuge Regi

Rifugio Regi sits at 1888m in the Vigezzo Valley, a quieter corner of Ticino that sees far fewer hikers than the main Alpine chains. Access from Druogno takes 2.5 hours on foot via the Valle Intrasca path. The hut works as a base for walking into the remote valleys north of the Lepontine Alps and for scrambling routes in the surrounding limestone peaks. This is genuine backcountry terrain, not a tourist destination.

The hut is tiny—just 9 beds spread across simple dorms. Expect basic Alpine shelter: a wood stove for heating, communal meals, and water from the mountain spring. The warden cooks simple dinners and serves breakfast. The hut operates year-round but winter access depends entirely on snow conditions and your own judgment. There is no road access; you hike or you don't arrive.

Book through CAI Vigezzo directly or contact the warden in advance. This hut fills only during summer weekends when locals from the Vigezzo use it. Most nights you'll have the place nearly to yourself. Phone ahead to confirm the warden is present and to order meals—especially important outside July and August when staffing is irregular.
