About

Bivacco Augusto Pala sits at 1910m in the Macugnaga valley of the Valais, on the Italian side of Monte Rosa. The hut is accessible from Staffa (1544m) via a 3–4 hour hike through alpine meadows and rocky terrain. Most parties approach from the Macugnaga valley floor, which lies about 90 minutes drive from Domodossola in Italy. The route gains roughly 370m and follows established trails marked for mountain access.

This is a small bivouac, not a staffed mountain hut. It provides basic shelter with sleeping platforms and a roof, typically holding 8–10 people in tight quarters. There is no electricity, heating, or cooked food service. You must bring all water, food, and fuel. The bivouac operates year-round, though winter access is serious mountaineering only—avalanche risk is real and the approach becomes a snow climb. Summer and autumn are the practical seasons for most hikers and mountaineers acclimatizing before Monte Rosa routes.

The CAI sezione di Macugnaga maintains the structure and access trails. No formal booking is required, though checking current conditions with them is sensible before visiting. The bivouac fills quickly during July and August, especially on weekends when parties are staging for Alpine climbs. Arrive early in the day if you plan to use it without reservation. Bring a good sleeping bag and mat—nights are cold even in summer at this elevation.
