Bivacco Gastaldi

Bivacco Gastaldi sits at 2,630m in the Monte Rosa massif, accessible from Gressoney-Saint-Jean via the Gressoney Valley. The approach takes 4–5 hours on foot, climbing steep terrain through alpine meadows and rocky ground. Snow and ice require winter mountaineering skills and equipment from November through May. The hut serves as a working base for traverses and peaks in the immediate area, particularly for climbers tackling the surrounding 4,000m summits. Its location on the eastern flank of Monte Rosa means you gain significant altitude and exposure quickly.
This is a small bivacco—a basic mountain refuge with 4 beds total. Expect minimal facilities: drinking water only, no meals or hot drinks served. You'll need to bring all food and fuel for cooking. There's no electricity or heating beyond what you generate yourself. The hut operates year-round, though winter access demands experience and appropriate gear. Spring and summer (June–September) offer the most stable climbing conditions.
Book directly with CAI Gressoney before departure. Weekends and July–August fill quickly, so contact them at least two weeks ahead. This is a serious mountaineer's refuge, not a comfortable lodging—plan accordingly with self-sufficiency in mind.
