About
Rifugio Gabiet sits at 2,370m in the Val d'Aosta, on the Italian side of the Alps near the Gran Paradiso massif. The most direct approach is from Pont, a small village accessible by car. From Pont, the hiking trail climbs roughly 1,000m in approximately 4 hours to reach the hut. The route follows the Valle di Gaby, gaining elevation steadily through alpine meadows and scree. Alternatively, you can approach from Gressoney-la-Trinité (French-speaking valley) via a longer route that takes 5–6 hours. Both approaches require solid hill-walking fitness; this is not a casual stroll.
The refuge operates year-round and manages around 30 beds in shared dormitories. Hot meals are served at dinner, and a basic breakfast is included with overnight stays. The hut has no shower facilities—bring wet wipes and accept that alpine accommodation means minimal washing. Water comes from mountain springs. The refuge is a working base for tackling peaks in the Gran Paradiso region, including climbs to Punta Giordani (3,457m) and Gran Paradiso itself (4,061m), so expect a mix of serious alpinists and mountain hikers.
Book directly with the hut by phone (+39 0125 306003) or email. July and August fill 4–6 weeks ahead. June and September are quieter and offer more reliable weather windows. The hut is particularly busy with guided groups climbing Gran Paradiso; call well ahead if you're planning a specific date. Winter access is possible but check conditions—the trail becomes snow-covered and requires experience.

The hut serves hot meals and offers dorm beds; bring cash and confirm availability of showers before arrival.
The 4-hour approach from Pont is doable for fit hikers with some Alpine experience, but the 1,000m elevation gain is serious—not ideal for inexperienced walkers.
