Bortelhütten

Bortelhütten sits at 2,113m in the Valais Alps, serving hikers on routes through the upper Turtmann Valley. Most people reach the hut from Turtmann village (2.5 hours) or from Gruben to the south (3–4 hours depending on the route). The location works well as a staging point for day walks to higher peaks or as an overnight stop on longer traverses connecting Valais valleys.

The hut has 40 beds split across multiple rooms. Meals are served—hot dinners and breakfasts—so you don't need to carry a stove. Drinking water is available on-site. There is no self-catering kitchen, so plan to eat what the hut provides or bring cold food. The hut operates through the hiking season, though confirm exact opening dates before travel. Basic mountain accommodation: expect shared dormitories, simple bedding, and a communal dining room.

Book by email or phone, especially if you're arriving mid-week or outside July–August when demand is lighter. July and August fill quickly on weekends; aim to book 4–6 weeks ahead for these periods. The hut is popular with SAC members and walkers doing the Turtmann-Gletsch or linking to neighbouring valleys, so weekends in peak season are reliably busy.
