Refuge Citta di Arona

Rifugio Citta di Arona sits at 1758m in the Valais Alps, accessible via several hiking routes through the Val d'Aosta region. The most common approach is from the village of Macugnaga on the eastern face of Monte Rosa, taking roughly 5–6 hours on a well-marked trail. You can also reach it from Gressoney-Saint-Jean to the south, a slightly longer but equally scenic route. The hut sits on the Italian side of the Swiss-Italian border but serves hikers tackling the Monte Rosa massif and surrounding peaks.
The refuge operates as a simple mountain hut with capacity for around 40–50 people in basic dormitory accommodation. Meals focus on hearty fare suited to mountain hiking: expect pasta, polenta, and local specialties. Hot showers and basic toilets are available. The hut is typically open from June through September, with limited shoulder-season access depending on snow conditions. Check conditions before visiting in late May or early October.
