Cabin D'Orny

Cabin d'Orny sits at 2,826m in the Bernese Obverland, above the Valais town of Le Champsec. The hut is accessible via a 4–5 hour walk from Lac de Tanay (1,717m), gaining 1,109m on a well-marked trail through alpine meadows and scree. In summer, a minibus runs from Le Champsec to Lac de Tanay, cutting 90 minutes off the approach. Winter access is possible but requires mountaineering skills and avalanche awareness—check conditions with the hut before attempting.
The hut accommodates 83 people in dormitory rooms with basic bedding provided. The SAC-CAS Section Diableret manages the facility, opening it year-round with reduced staffing in winter months. Hot meals are served daily when the hut is staffed; bring a stove if visiting during unstaffed periods. Drinking water is available from a spring. The cabin is an established base for the Chaîne du Diableret traverses and ascents of peaks including Pic Chaussy (3,142m) and Mont Ruan (2,840m).
Book at least 6–8 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Contact the hut directly by email or phone to confirm availability and winter opening dates. The hut is busiest on weekends from June through September; midweek visits are easier to accommodate. Arrive by early afternoon to settle in before dinner service.
