Cabin Legnano

Capanna Legnano sits at 1,287m in the Val d'Herens, a quiet valley south of Evolène in Valais. Reach it from Evolène village (1,370m) by hiking 2.5 hours northwest through forest and meadow. The trail is well-marked and gains 200m elevation—straightforward terrain for any reasonably fit hiker. This is a basecamp hut, not a mountain pass refuge, so it works well for families and those exploring the lower valleys.

The hut is small and intimate, sleeping around 30 people in simple dormitory and private rooms. The SAC-affiliated operator runs a basic kitchen and serves set meals at dinner. Water is reliable. There's no shower, and toilet facilities are basic—come expecting simplicity. The hut operates year-round, though staffing can be minimal in winter months. It's an ideal jumping-off point for day walks into the Val d'Herens or as a quiet stop on longer valley traverses.

Book directly with the hut keeper by phone. Weekends fill faster than weekdays. July and August require booking at least 2-3 weeks ahead. Outside summer, you can usually find space with a few days' notice. Winter visits need confirming by phone first, as the hut may not have a permanent keeper on-site.
