Hörnlihütte

Hörnlihütte sits at 3,260m on the northeast ridge of the Matterhorn. Most parties approach via Hörnli from Zermatt, a 2.5-hour hike gaining 1,300m. The trail crosses meadows then scree and fixed chains on steep ground. A few parties arrive via the longer Hörnli Grat approach. The hut stands exposed to weather and wind at this altitude.
The SAC-managed hut has 120 beds in shared dormitories. Meals include dinner and breakfast; bring your own lunch or buy packed meals. The kitchen provides hot water and tea. Water is available from the hut's supply. Most climbers use this as their base for the Hörnli Ridge route on the Matterhorn (4,478m). The hut also serves as a staging point for mixed alpinism in the area. The hut is staffed from June through September, with limited shoulder-season access in May and early October depending on snow conditions.
Book at least three months ahead for July and August; June and September fill quickly too. Email or phone ahead to confirm availability and discuss your plans with the guardian. Groups of eight or more should book further in advance. Arrive with minimal daypack weight—this is a high mountain hut and every kilogram matters on the approach scree. The hut is cash-only for most transactions, though some card payments may be accepted; confirm current policy when booking.
