Monte Rosa Hut

Monte Rosa Hut sits at 2,883m on the Monte Rosa massif in Valais, Switzerland. The standard approach takes 3 to 4 hours from Täsch via Rotenboden. Most hikers take the cable car from Zermatt to Rotenboden (this saves 1.5 hours of ascent), then follow the marked trail south across the Gornergletscher and up scree slopes to the hut. The route is straightforward but exposed to afternoon rockfall—start early. In winter the glacier approach becomes dangerous; winter access requires mountaineering skills and an ice axe.
The hut operates year-round and holds 120 beds across multiple dormitory rooms. SAC members get discounted rates. Meals are served daily: hearty dinners focus on simple alpine food, and breakfast is substantial. The self-catering kitchen lets you prepare your own meals if you prefer. Water is available throughout the hut. WiFi is available but unreliable due to altitude and exposure. The hut staff can advise on conditions for routes on Monte Rosa, Breithorn, and neighboring 4,000m peaks. The atmosphere tends toward serious mountaineers rather than casual hikers.
Book by email or phone—Monte Rosa Hut fills hard in July and August, especially weekends. Reserve at least 6 to 8 weeks ahead for peak season. Shoulder months (June, September) are quieter. Confirm your exact arrival time when you book, as meals are served at set times. The hut is unmanned between early November and mid-December; contact ahead if you're visiting outside summer.
